For Immediate Release
Town of Collierville Public Information Office
The Linda Kerley Center has opened its doors, so what happens next? While some finishing touches are being made in the building, regularly scheduled programming will move from the Cox Community Center to the Linda Kerley Center the week of November 6, 2017.
Lisa Gaither, the Town’s Recreation Program Coordinator, can tell you the current schedule by memory, as some of the popular activities have been taking place for years – like the Senior Exercise class which started in 1993 and has 47 active attendees today. There is also a Stretch, Balance and Breathe class for toning and relaxation. Group games include Bingo, Dominoes, and Bridge.
For the future, Lisa will launch new programs that incorporate suggested activities from excited seniors.
“We will have educational speakers, arts and crafts, special events such as dances and afternoon teas, and pickleball,” said Lisa. “We had a visitor stop by the other day who asked if we could start playing pickleball.” (Pickleball is a paddle sport growing in popularity that combines elements from tennis, badminton and ping pong.)
To help facilitate the foot traffic at the Linda Kerley Center, there are three, part-time Recreation Assistants who will greet visitors at the front desk, answer phone calls, and set up activities.
The Linda Kerley Center is located at 176 College Street with the main entrance accessible on Poplar. The center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00am-4:00pm. Visitors can find out more information by calling Lisa Gaither at 901-457-2775 or visiting colliervilleparks.org and clicking on the “Seniors” tab on the main menu of the homepage.
Current programs that will begin this month at the center include:
The Senior Exercise class meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:15-10:00am; the Stretch, Balance, and Breathe class that meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15-11:00am.
