Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Lyrics by Tim Rice; Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

The Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors comes to vibrant life in this delightful musical parable.  Joseph is a boy blessed with prophetic dreams and is his fathers favorite son.  When he is sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and taken to Egypt, Joseph endures a series of adventures in which his spirit and humanity are continually challenged.  He is purchased by the Potiphars where thwarting advances from the Mrs. lands him in jail.  When news of Josephs gift to interpret dreams reaches Pharaoh, Joseph is well on his way to becoming second in command.  Eventually his brothers, having suffered greatly, unknowingly find themselves groveling at the feet of the brother they betrayed but no longer recognize.  After testing their integrity, Joseph reveals himself leading to a heartfelt reconciliation of the sons of Israel.  Set to an engaging cornucopia of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock n roll, this Old Testament tale emerges both timely and timeless.

The Match Girls Gift
An original play by Laurie Brooks
Inspired by Hans Christian Andersens lyric fairy tale

It is Christmas Eve and Lizzie, a poor match girl with threadbare clothing and no shoes, huddles outside a grand mansion to keep warm.  She has always dreamed of entering that fine house, but her dreams are giving way to hunger and sickness.  Suddenly, a vision of Lizzies beloved grandmother appears before her, with a special Christmas gift.  Lizzie is told to light three matches, and each time she will have a waking dream - a vision of a future that could be if Lizzie keeps dreaming, ...for without dreams, we are without hope.  After the last match burns out and it seems that all hope is lost, fate steps in and brings the happy ending that Lizzie has dreamed of.

Music by Richard Rodgers; Lyrics & Book by Oscar Hammerstein II

East versus West makes for a dramatic, richly textured and ultimately uplifting tale of enormous fascination.  It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by King Mongkut to serve as governess and tutor to his many children.  The King is largely considered to be a barbarian by those in the West.  He seeks Annas assistance in changing his image, if not his ways.  With both keeping a firm grip on their respective traditions and values, Anna and the King grow to understand and eventually, respect one another and fall in love.

Winner of six Academy Awards, The King and I contains some of the worlds best-loved songs, including Getting to Know You, I Whistle a Happy Tune, and Shall We Dance?

Play Dates
July 16 August 1, 2004

Who We Are

The Harrell Performing Arts Theatre, through the Collierville Arts Council, is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the performing arts.  Established in September 1987, we seek to advance and strengthen community bonds by developing interest in the arts.  We fulfill this purpose by producing theatre, music, and dance performances that continue to be an expression of the communitys talents, values, needs, resources, and aspirations.

Revenue for the Arts Council is generated through ticket and subscription sales, donations, and fundraising.  As a part of these efforts, we offer opportunities for corporate sponsorship.

During the last season, more than 8,000 people attended Collierville Arts Council productions.  The Harrell Theatre seeks to provide a balanced selection of dramatic pieces; in the past, we have produced such diverse offerings as Cheaper by the Dozen, Little Women, The Sound of Music, Annie, The Odd Couple, Nunsense, The Music Man, The House at Pooh Corner, Wood and Strings Puppet Theatre, The Best of Bernstein, and Driving Miss Daisy.

Additionally, the Arts Council sponsors school matinees for certain productions throughout the year.  Children from the city of
Memphis and surrounding counties attend these performances, which are offered at a discounted rate.  This year, we had more than 3,000 children to attend performances of The Match Girls Gift.

The Harrell Theatre encourages members of the community to volunteer their time working for our various productions. These volunteers come to special work days where they assist with set construction, painting, and all kinds of scenic work.  Volunteers also help with finding props, sewing costumes, and putting up posters.  Volunteers run the light board, the sound system, and the follow spot.  They usher and help with house management and box office duties. Interested volunteers should call Wayne Warren at 853-3228.
