The Linda Kerley Center opened its doors November 6, 2017.
Lisa Gaither, the Town’s Recreation Program Coordinator, can tell you the current schedule by memory, as some of the popular activities have been taking place for years – like the Senior Exercise class which started in 1993 and has 47 active attendees today. There is also a Stretch, Balance and Breathe class for toning and relaxation. Group games include Bingo, Dominoes, and Bridge.
For the future, Lisa will launch new programs that incorporate suggested activities from excited seniors.
“We will have educational speakers, arts and crafts, special events such as dances and afternoon teas, and pickleball,” said Lisa. “We had a visitor stop by the other day who asked if we could start playing pickleball.” (Pickleball is a paddle sport growing in popularity that combines elements from tennis, badminton and ping pong.)
The Linda Kerley Senior Center also has a new Billiard Room that has a pool table, dart board and card table. There is no charge to come and play in the Billiard Room. If you are a pool player and are looking for someone to play with, contact the front desk at 901-457-2769 to get your name and email on a contact list of players.
To help facilitate the foot traffic at the Linda Kerley Center, there are three, part-time Recreation Assistants who will greet visitors at the front desk, answer phone calls, and set up activities.
The Linda Kerley Center is located at 176 College Street with the main entrance accessible on Poplar Avenue. The center will be open Monday through Friday from 8:00am-4:00pm.
