HISTORY

Collierville’s history arguably starts with the railroad coming to Collierville in October 1852, two years after the Town’s first incorporation. The Memphis and Charleston Railroad opened up new trading markets for Collierville and stimulated the growth of agriculture in this area.

The first train depot was built in 1854, just east of today’s Town Square Park.  After it was destroyed in the Civil War, the depot operated from a boxcar, then from a small depot built in the area of Center Street. In 1886, a one story building was built in its place with two large waiting rooms that served as a combination passenger and freight station. By the 1940s, it was badly deteriorated and too costly for the declining numbers of passengers and freight service. Southern Railroad decided to relocate the depot in La Grange, TN, 25 miles east of Collierville. The La Grange Depot was cut in half, placed on two flat cars, and transported to Collierville. It was opened on October 3, 1944. In 1976, Southern Railroad donated the Depot to the Town of Collierville.
